The Gospel of Mark

Chapter 3

Again, Jesus entered the synagogue there,

And a man was inside with a withered hand.

They watched Jesus closely to see what he’d do,

If he’d cure on the sabbath, so they might reprimand.

He said to the man with the withered hand

Come up before Us.” And He said to the crowd,

Is it lawful, on sabbath, to do good or evil?

Rather save life than kill it, is that allowed?

But the crowds remained silent, so, looking at them

With anger, and grieved at what hard hearts accord.

He said to the man “Stretch out your hand.”

The man stretched his arm out and his hand was restored.

The Pharisees went out at once now to plot,

With Herodians, against Him, to condemn Him to die.

And Jesus withdrew to the sea with disciples,

From Judea and Galilee a great crowd came nigh.

Also from Idumea and Jerusalem came

From beyond that Jordan, from Sidon and Tyre,

A large crowd of people looking for Jesus.

He asked his disciples a boat to acquire

So that way the crowds would not crush him on shore.

So many he healed that those sick with disease

Would press hard around him to touch if they could.

And His presence made unclean spirits wheeze:

You are the Son of God Jesus of Nazareth!

When they fell down before him and then cried that out.

He warned them quite sternly to not make this known.

Jesus called men He wanted and went up that mount.

He appointed twelve, whom he named apostles,

So they might be with Him and sent out to preach.

He gave them authority to cast out demons.

He named Simon “Peter.” Twelve appointed to teach:

James the son of Zebedee and his brother John,

Whom he named Boanerages, that is, sons of thunder.

Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew,

James of Alphaeus, Thaddeus, Zealot Simon, and under

All these was Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Jesus.

Jesus came home. Crowds gathered and confined

The disciples so they could not eat. When his relatives

Heard this, they seized Jesus saying “He’s out of His mind!

The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying,

He’s possessed by Beelzebul” and other things terrible:

He drives out demons by that prince of demons!”

So now Jesus summoned them, and spoke in this parable:

He said “How can Satan cast out Satan?

A kingdom against itself cannot soon stand.

And a house divided against itself likewise.

So if Satan is risen against his own hand,

And if he’s divided he cannot stand too,

But he comes to his end. Yet a strong man’s home,

Is where no one can enter to plunder his goods,

Unless he first ties up the man, then thieves roam.

Amen, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven

And all blasphemies uttered, except for whomever

Blasphemes against the true Holy Spirit,

They can’t be forgiven, and are guilty forever.

He spoke this for some said “His spirit is unclean.”

Then the mother and brothers of Jesus arrived.

Standing outside they sent word and they called him,

A crowd seated round Him relayed this, derived

They said “Your mother and brothers are outside and seek you.

He answered “Who is mother or brother but you?”

Then looking around he said “You are them,

For whomever does God’s will, is my family true.
